In Hindu mythology, there was a King named Daksha, who proposed to Moon to marry all his 27 daughters, on which Moon agreed. They were the 27 Nakshatras. However, Moon was in love with Rohini the most and loved spending time with Queen Rohini which is also considered as the Moon’s exaltation point. All the 26 other wives complained of this behavior of Moon to the King Daksha. The King repeatedly requested the Moon to love all his wives equally but the Moon did not change his nature.
This infuriated the king, who cursed Moon to shrink in size. As a result, the Moon started waning in size. The consequences were not good and all the deities intervened and asked King Daksha to take his curse back. All the Devtas promised the King that Moon will equally visit and spend equal time with wives. But as the curse could not be withdrawn completely, so as a remedy the waxing and waning of the Moon started from then. This is the main reason that the Moon goes through all the 27 Nakshatras in the period of one month by finishing the orbit which leads to Purnima and Amavasya by increasing and decreasing in size.

A tithi is a lunar day. There are 15 tithis in the waxing cycle of the moon (shukla paksha), and there are 15 tithis in the waning cycle of the Moon ( Krishna paksha). The tithi is based on a relationship between the Sun and the Moon. The first tithi is 12 degrees of the Moon away from the Sun after the new Moon (Amavasya) or full Moon (Purnima). The second tithi is the next 12 degrees of the Moon away from the Sun, 12 to 24 degrees. A particular day is ruled by the tithi at sunrise, but the tithi can change anytime of the day or night as it is not based on the solar day.
Tithis vary in duration from approximately 19 to 26 hours, according to the movement of the Moon. Each tithi has a name, a ruling planet, and can be used in muhurta (picking a proper time).
