In astrology, the twelve zodiac signs are grouped based on four elements: Fire (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius), Earth (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn), Water (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces), and Air (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius). Keep reading if you want to see how I personally perceive the characteristics of these four elements but please take my Sagittarian honesty with a grain of salt 🙂
Having been born a Sagittarius with a Leo moon, I’ve got quite a lot of fire! What is lagna in vedic astrology. I do things kind of impulsively and I am currently learning that this is actually something I should embrace rather than shy away from. My parents, both with their more stable, earthy moons, and my mom’s airy Sun, were quite worried about my impulsivity.
I’m learning, however, that fire’s impulsiveness is actually really useful for getting things started. When friends talk about going on a trip together, who starts the ACTUAL planning? From what I’ve personally observed, it’s usually the fire signs. (Ok, maybe it’s also amplified by Sagittarian presences in some of our charts and Sagittarians are, after all, infamous for their obsession with traveling). But my husband is a fire sign, doesn’t have any significant Sagittarian influences in his natal chart, and I have observed him having a lot to do with the concrete planning of many past group trips. So, yes, I believe it has to do with the fire in his chart.
When I look back on the things I am happiest and most satisfied with, its things that I ended up deciding to do rather impulsively! The fire’s impulsiveness can get in the way of finishing tasks, but it is definitely a helpful trait to have when it comes to getting everyone started on a project or new venture.
FIRE SIGNS: ARIES / LEO / SAGITTARIUS. WATER SIGNS: CANCER / SCORPIO / PISCES. What does it mean to have many Fire and Water Signs in your chart? Fire and Water are both elements of the emotional body. FIRE is the outward expression of emotion – passion, drama, intensity and enthusiasm – while WATER is the inner experience of emotion. Air signs bring a natural complementary energy to Leo, as air feeds fire, stoking it to grow and become more alive. Gemini and Libra bring a playfulness, sociability, and curiosity to Leo’s love of pleasure and celebration. Ruled by Saturn, Aquarius brings discernment, thoughtfulness, and objectivity to this proud and solar-ruled.
I also believe the reason my husband and I got together so early in our lives is because of the prevalence of fire in both of our charts. However, the fire element is probably not the reason we stayed together for so long; that, I believe, would be thanks to the stable earthiness in both of our charts.
My husband’s moon sign is an earthy Taurus. Paired with my stellium in earthy Capricorn, we both appreciate stability and in my opinion, this is what helped us stay together even through the tougher times.
Most of the earth signs that I have observed are more thorough and work hard because material stability and comfort is extremely important to them. Thus, they are generally less impulsive and think long and hard before switching or quitting jobs, relationships, etc (at least comparing to fire and water signs).
Interestingly, I view water signs as somewhat similar to fire signs because water’s moodiness is kind of similar to fire’s impulsiveness. Maybe they say water gets along with earth better than with fire because a moody water sign and an impulsive fire sign will just end up breaking down (water), flaring up (fire), and running in the opposite direction from one another. But an earthy sign will bring a sense of calm and stability to the emotional water sign.
Water signs, along with their emotions, sort of float from one thing to the next. They are usually easily influenced because they are not rigidly stable as Earth signs are. Water signs are more swayed by emotions than air signs. No wonder water signs are some of the most intuitive and empathic people.
Air signs, on the other hand, believe they need to think everything through very thoroughly because they don’t naturally trust emotions, preferring to rely on logic. They may be intelligent, but all the thinking and overthinking can stump them in taking action to achieve their desired results.
Air signs are intelligent but they think and overthink so much, they are the most prone to insomnia. They will not act on impulse like a fire sign might, nor are they likely to listen to their emotions enough to be swayed by them. All of this kind of makes them more rigid, almost like the Earth signs.
However, there is a huge difference between Earth and Air signs. Earth signs are concerned for and long to enjoy the luxuries of the material plane including physical comfort, eating well, and satisfying their physical senses. Air signs, on the other hand, will be having intelligent conversations about abstract ideas, while slightly scoffing at Earth signs for being materialistic and simpleminded. Nonetheless, air signs can do well to get grounded from time to time. Taking a break from all the worrying about the past and the future, air signs can greatly benefit from meditation and being present. Doing so, air signs may even find their problems with sleeping gently fade away. Actually we can all greatly benefit from meditation and focusing on the present moment but air signs need it especially!
As long as we focus on doing good, whether we have more Fire, Earth, Water, or Air in us, we can be proud that our unique traits serve their own important purpose in this world. The twelve zodiac signs are grouped into four elements—fire, earth, air and water. Each of these elementary groups has distinct traits. Together, they form the natural world, so each is in some way dependent on the other.
Fire Signs: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Earth Signs: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Air Signs: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Water Signs: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
Like fire itself, fire signs tend to be passionate, dynamic, and temperamental. Fire can keep you warm, or it can do great destruction. While fire burns out quickly without fuel to keep it going, it can also regenerate its power from the ashes. A single spark can set off a forest fire. As a result, fire signs need to be nurtured and managed carefully.
Air signs are all about action, ideas, and motion—they are the “winds of change.” When a strong gust hits you, you can’t help but move. While some within their ranks may be true-life “airheads,” others are as powerful as a gravity-defying G-force. Air signs bring everyone a breath of fresh air when things start to get stale. Like the breeze, you can’t quite catch them, and you never know where they’ll drop you once they sweep you up. It will almost always been an adventure, though.
Earth signs keep it real. They are the “grounded” people on the planet, the ones who bring us down to earth and remind us to start with a solid foundation. Slow and steady, these “builders” are loyal and stable, and stick by their people through hard times. On good days, they’re practical; at worst, they can be materialistic or too focused on the surface of things to dig into the depths.
Intuitive, emotional and ultra-sensitive, water signs can be as mysterious as the ocean itself. Like water, they can be refreshing, or they can drown you in their depths. These signs often have intense dreams and borderline-psychic intuition. Security is important to them—after all, water needs a container, or it dries up and disappears.
